How it began

This website was born in September of 2004 when work began on researching Brew Like a Monk.

I set out to ask as many brewers as possible how they make the sorts of beers the book features, about the choices they make along the way, and why they make those choices. I mailed questionnaires to more than a hundred breweries in Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, and Canada.

The site was the primary means by which collect similar information from homebrewers, as well as find out the sort of questions they’d like to see answered in the book. Obviously, it also promoted the book before it was published.

Now that the book is in print the site will still fill a promotional role. What else?

You’ll play a role in that. The site has been remodeled as a weblog. That allows me to post information from the book, corrections (I hope not too many), clarifications, information about things that have changed (already have some notes in hand), general news, recipes, and … it’s a long list.

You can participate by commenting on posts or by e-mailing me suggestions or questions that might end up as posts of their own.

Let’s get to it.
